As most people know, the writers of our favorite TV shows have gone on
strike. At issue is compensation for writers for television programs
that are aired on other mediums such as streaming online and DVDs.
How is this a Disney issue? First, Disney is listed as one of the
companies hardest hit by the strike with its ABC network relying
heavily on scripted shows like, Grey's Anatomy, Samantha Who and
Women's Murder Club. It is noteworthy that reality shows like Extreme
Makeover: Home Edition and Dancing with the Stars are not effected by
this strike as they are under a separate contract. ABC and Disney
reportedly have "many" (just how many is unclear) episodes in the
pipeline that will not be effected by the strike. Of further concern
is a growing panic in the industry that they are losing their young
audience to the internet and other sources of entertainment. Should
the strike drag on most shows will go into reruns. If they lose
viewers midseason, then they may not come back. This is an incentive
for both writers and producers to get back to the negotiation table.
