We’ve been following the potential Disney Shanghai deal for sometime now. Reuters is reporting that they have obtained documents that not only state that there will be a Disney theme park but that the Walt Disney Company will have unprecedented access to the people of Shanghai. This would give Disney a jump over other foreign media trying to make headway into largely untapped Chinese market. Right now the government in China tightly controls what movies are shown in the country. There are all sorts of rules including the number of foreign films, only 20, released in the country per year. If this story holds up Disney will be building a theme park in the Pudong district of Shanghai and be able to release more movies than any other western media company in the People’s Republic. The Reuters article states that a final agreement has not yet been reached and may not be until after the Olympics. While there is no doubt in my mind that if this is true it is wonderful news for Disney, we’ll just have to wait and see. What do you think?
