There was a little piece in today’s Irish Times, stating that a 5 year comprehensive study of the world’s primate species has just been completed, the study was partially funded by the Disney’s Animal Kingdom (the article reports Animal Kingdom but I suspect that it was funded by the Disney Wildlife Conservation Fund) and conducted by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The news coming from the study is not so good. The report states that of the world’s 638 primate species 50% are in danger of becoming extinct. The report attributes this mostly to habitat loss and human development, such as rainforest deforestation, and illegal wildlife trade. Let’s hope that continuing conservation efforts can help these endangered species.
